10/14/21 Eagle Rock Loop Day 1, Quachita Natl Forest AR 41 5.02 3:37:29 1.385 43:19 154.23 3.76 Drove about 3 hours to the Athens-Big Fork North Trailhead, it was raining so we drove to the closer Little Missouri/Athens-Big Fork Junction Trailhead via very bumpy gravel forest roads. Van lift-gate latch broke, luckily we already had our packs out.
Started the backpacking adventure about 1:55pm, temp about 82, with an immediate water crossing of the Little Missouri River. We made it about 20 minutes before the rain started again.
Hiked 5 miles over 4 mountains.
First summit had a scenic view, Spirit Rock Vista, but mostly we saw rain/drizzle/fog.
There was so much rain/drizzle/fog that when I got my phone out it was difficult to dry the screen enough to take pictures. I didn't have a dry spot on me.
5 miles, 10 water crossings.
Tree had fallen across the trail so we had to divert around it on a bunch of loose rock, not easy with a fully loaded backpack.
We wanted to get over 3 of the 6 mountains on the first day. Ultimately we decided to hike the fourth one as well.
Ended hiking about 5:33pm, temp was 78, rain had stopped.
Set up tents. Cooked dinner, freeze dried Pad Thai. It was decent. Shared some bourbon. Put our food bags in a dry sack, then into a varmint-proof bag, then hung it in a tree. To bed before dark. Didn't cool off much this evening. With my brother Dave.

10/15/21 Eagle Rock Loop Day 2, Quachita Natl Forest AR 42 9.35 6:07:55 1.525 39:21 163.58 3.89 Up about 8am. Breakfast of hot coffee and Pop Tarts. Broke camp, started hiking around 9:20am.
We tackled the biggest mountain of the trip (#5), 800ft of climbing over 9/10 mile. Tough.
We skipped Brush Heap Mountain summit because it was too overcast/rainy.
We did drop our packs and hike to Eagle Rock Vista Scenic overlook where we found cell reception!
Sent a Snapchat and pic to family. Katie had sent some pics from Florida - they looked great.
Rained on again. Hiked Mountain #6. Another downed tree.
Crossed Little Missouri River with no issue, knee deep. It can be very deep here and fast moving current.
We used our Sawyer Squeeze's to get water from river and filter it - worked great.
Heavy rain for 15 minutes, later the sun appeared. Wet 3 days in a row.
Saw lots of hikers today, perhaps because it’s Friday.
Confused at one spot, two dudes ahead of said we’ll watch you. A mother and daughter were coming from other way. I asked where they crossed, she said they were mistaken, trail stayed on our side. Solid tip, glad I asked!
Stumbled upon a fridge that exists between the river and the trail, we both singed it as is tradition. We marveled at how this fridge got here as no nearby roads.
9.3 miles, 6:07 time. 19 water crossings, 1,240 ft of elevation gain.
Talked and sipped bourbon. Lots of daddy long-leg spiders at campsite. In tent by 8pm.
Campsite by Little Missouri River, nice white noise. With my brother Dave.

10/16/21 Eagle Rock Loop Day 3, Quachita Natl Forest AR 43 8.41 5:04:59 1.655 36:16 171.99 4.00 Up about 8am, didn’t feel like getting out of bed because it was cold outside. Moving slow. Because of all the water crossings the first two days, I had been wearing Keen sandals.
Little toes on both feet rubbed raw and bleeding so it's band-aides, wool socks and a change of footwear (real hiking shoes) today. Breakfast of pop tart and coffee.
Dave was ready to way before me so he filtered some water from the river for us to drink on today's hike.
On the trail about 10:15am. Tried to help a couple that were lost trying to return from Winding Stairs. They were headed in the wrong direction. Signage not the greatest in this area. Lots of hikers/backpackers. Bathroom closed at Albert Pike Recreation Area. We were so looking forward to this. Campground is closed here as a flash flood killed 20 campers in 2010 when the river rose from 3' to 23' in four hours. We had lunch at the picnic area which is still open. Did hike to Winding Stairs, nothing to see? Slipped in the water twice crossing the river. Met two dudes trying to complete the hike in 1.5 days, impressive!
Ended hiking about 4pm.
8.41 miles, 10 water crossings.
Pooped in the woods, cumbersome. Gives whole new meaning to the phrase "tree hugger".
Tortilla’s and peanut butter for dinner. We had a nice campfire. Bourbon: Blanton’s, Woodford Reserve. With my brother Dave.

10/17/21 Eagle Rock Loop Day 4, Quachita Natl Forest AR 44 7.57 4:00:26 1.889 31:46 179.56 4.08 Up at 7am, coldest night yet, down into the 40’s. Dave put on his puffy jacket during the night because he was so cold. Breakfast was Pop Tarts and water. No coffee as decent bathroom facilities far and few between.
Started hiking just after 8:30am. Highlight was Little Missouri Falls. Fun to climb around on them. Reminded me of Johnson's Shutins a little bit.
Left the yellow painted rock at a trailhead near the Little Missouri Falls. We had found this rock on a trail in Winfield KS and I had forgotten about for a while.
Restrooms (pit toilets) open at the falls. This was the only open bathroom on the whole trip. Lots of up and down, rocks and roots. My neck/shoulders got fatigued so I had to stop about 4/10 mile from the finish to rest a bit.
River was down where we started on Thursday, so we could hop across the rocks and not get our feet wet. Finished about 1:20pm, just under 72 hours from when we started. We shared a celebratory beer as we loaded gear in the van.
7.57 miles, 11 water crossings.
I drove, Dave navigated but no cell signal here. Miles and miles of bad gravel roads to back to highway 8. Lots of 4 runners on the gravel roads. Stopped at McDonald's for double cheese burgers with extra pickles, great combo.
Drove back to Springdale AR to retrieve Dave's car, then on to Rogers AR. Got at room at the Embassy Suites near the Uptown Kitchen and Bar. Intended to walk to the restaurant for dinner but my two little toes both had blisters so we used Uber there and back. With my brother Dave.
